1. What Readable Is

Readable is a document reader that lets you upload, organize, and read files (PDF, TXT, EPUB) with optional AI-powered features. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights over it.

2. Data We Collect

• Account data — your email address and name when you sign up, managed by Clerk (our authentication provider). See Clerk's Privacy Policy.
• Document content — files you upload are stored to serve them back to you. When you use AI features (chapter parsing, summarization), the relevant text is sent to OpenAI's API for processing. See OpenAI's Privacy Policy. OpenAI does not use API-submitted content to train their models by default.
• Preferences — reading settings (theme, font, etc.) are stored locally in your browser's localStorage. This data never leaves your device.
• Edu verification — if you claim an educational discount, your account's email domain is checked. No additional personal data is stored beyond what your account already contains.

3. How We Use Your Data

• To provide and operate the Readable service
• To process AI feature requests on your documents
• To manage your account, billing tier, and edu discount status
• We do not sell your data to third parties
• We do not use your data for advertising

4. Cookies & Local Storage

Readable uses cookies strictly for authentication session management (via Clerk). We use your browser's localStorage to remember your reading preferences. We do not use any advertising, analytics, or tracking cookies.

5. Data Retention

Your documents and account data are retained for as long as your account is active. You may delete your account and all associated data at any time from your account settings. Deleted data is removed within 30 days.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data. To exercise these rights, contact us at the address below. If you are in the EU/EEA, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

7. Children's Privacy

Readable is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Significant changes will be communicated via email or an in-app notice. Continued use of Readable after changes constitutes acceptance.
